A house renovation in North Wales revealed an unsettling discovery when an old radiator was removed. Stuffed behind it by a previous owner was what appeared to be a voodoo doll. As well as several pins, the small effigy was pierced by a screw and a threaded needle.

Written on a plaster binding the string doll was the name of a woman, presumably the intended recipient of its “magic”. When an image of the creepy doll was posted online, some dismissed it as “hocus pocus”. However others labelled it “freaky” and “super weird”.

Some even offered advice on disposing of the effigy without unleashing negative magic. “Not a very nice thing to find,” shuddered one person. She said “Estelle” had been written on the effigy but she declined to reveal the surname. Attempts to find the history of the house and the people who lived there have since drawn a blank. After seeing the doll, she said: “It was quite scary and fascinating at the same time.

I’d love to find out more.” Effigies like this were used in the magical traditions of cultures around the world. They are popularly known as “voodoo dolls”, a misnomer as they have little to do with the Haitian Vodou and Louisiana.
