Simon Barlow is leaving the nest and Coronation Street actor Alex Bain bid a heartfelt farewell to the soap on social media. ITV viewers have seen Simon struggle in recent months after the surprise departure of his father Peter, who left Weatherfield without even saying goodbye to his son on Boxing Day. Finding solace in alcohol, much like his cabbie dad before him, Simon drowned his demons which landed him in trouble when he drove Leanne Battersby's car while under the influence.

Desperate for a fresh start, amid his mother's cult horror and fallout with both Nick Tilsley and her sister Toyah, Simon has decided to leave the cobbles to join Peter overseas. Over on the ITV soap's official Instagram account, Alex Bain welcomed the end of an era as he was filmed saying goodbye to both Weatherfield and Corrie fans in a heart-warming video. "I just wanted to say that it's been a fantastic experience," the 22-year-old said about his long stint on the Manchester-based drama, which began in 2008.

"I've loved being here and I've loved being a part of the nation's favourite street and I just wanted to say a big old thank you to everybody who's supported me over the years, all the people I've worked with." He then added: "It's been an honour and I will always cherish my time here on Coronation Street." The quick video prompted Alex's on-screen mother, Jane Danson aka Leanne, to respond in the comment section, writing: "End of an era.

Good luck Al...

Such special times." Aadi Alahan star.
