A total of 18,774 new homes could be built across Colchester by 2042 to address a housing need of 1,043 per year, a council meeting has heard. Colchester City Council Local Plan Committee was given the update at a meeting on Monday, June 17. At the same meeting, campaigners and a leading bird charity raised “serious concerns” about possible plans to build about 1,000 homes on Colchester beauty spot, Middlewick Ranges.

Speaking at the meeting, Sandra Scott, place strategy manager explained how the figure for housing needs has increased. She said: “The need to review plans every five years means it’s necessary for the local plan review to update the need for Colchester The current number of 920 per year is based on the objectively assessed housing need which was used in the adopted local plan under the transitional arrangements. This evidence therefore needs to be updated to inform the local plan review.
