There is no place I love more than being on the shores of Lake Superior. Something is healing about the breathtakingly vast, deep blue waters of the biggest lake in the United States. She has taken many lives and has given life to many.
Lake Superior, or Gichi-Gami, as named by the Ojibwa tribe that lived off the lake long before us, has a magical presence. I was baptized in this lake and have a forever connection to it. I have worked with older adults for the last 5 years, and my favorite stories are those that revolve around Lake Superior.
Some have told me they go to the lake to mourn lost loved ones, or to celebrate a milestone in life. It has seen the worst of people and those in their prime moments. It experiences life, and it sits, like a family member by your side, for death.
It is the life cycle of many of those who get to experience its beauty. Emily Grant is the Senior Companion Program Volunteer Coordinator for the Center for Healthy Aging at InterFaith Works. She was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and moved to Syracuse in September of 2023.
