It wasn’t the prettiest game, but for the Nokomis softball team, it couldn’t have been a more beautiful victory. Mia Coots threw a two-hitter, Addison Hawthorne had a go-ahead triple to break a scoreless tie, and the Warriors defeated York, 2-1, in the Class B stoftball final to win their first state championship. The game, a rematch of York’s 2-1 victory last year, was mistake-ridden, with three errors on each side.
In the top of the sixth, Raegan King reached when her pop-up fell just behind the pitching circle, and Hawthorne followed with a sinking liner down the right-field line that fell for a triple. An error on the throw trying to catch her at third went out of play, bringing in Hawthorne for a 2-0 lead. York, held hitless by Coots through five, cut the gap to one in the bottom of the sixth when Emily Estes singled and Maddie Fitzgerald doubled her in, but Coots (nine strikeouts) retired McKayla Kortes and Sarah Orso to escape the jam.
Kortes struck out nine and allowed three hits for the Wildcats (19-1). This story will be updated. « Previous.
