Toni Shields, received the horror diagnosis on May 22 after going to the doctor to investigate an issue with her spleen. The mother immediately thought about her two sons and started to prepare for end-of-life care and even started to organise her funeral. Just a week later, however, Ms Shields' plans came to a sudden halt after her doctor revealed a mix-up had caused another patient's files to be sent to her.

Ms Shields initially discovered the heartbreaking news through her Patient Portal - equivalent to Australia's My Health Record - and was told to see the doctor immediately.
