The Chico State University Farm is starting a new project with a seasonal roadside farm stand slated to open Wednesday. The stand will be located at the corner of Nicholas C. Shouten and Hegan lanes.
The first items sold will be sweet corn with melons expected to later in the season. Chico State students will run the stand from 8 a.m.
to noon Monday through Friday. Corn will be be priced at $5 for a dozen ears or 50 cents per stalk. Checks and cash are accepted.
The money raised from sales will help the College of Agriculture’s row crop program, where students learn the fundamentals and support research to one of the state’s top industries. “This bicolor corn is as sweet as it is beautiful, and will make a great addition to summer tables,” said University Farm Row Crops Specialist Kevin Renker. “We’re thrilled to have this new offering and hope the community will be equally excited.
We’re just a short drive from the heart of Chico for some of the freshest corn you can find in Butte County.” The annual Slice of Chico sidewalk sale returns Saturday, July 13, according to a news release from the Downtown Chico Business Association. The watermelon slice giveaway runs from 10 a.
m. to 5 p.m.
Participants can munch on free ice-cold watermelon slices and explore the downtown shops and restaurants, where staff will have items displayed on sidewalks, according to the release. There will be special deals and promotions. Watermelon slice stations open at 11 a.
