Let’s celebrate by conserving soil and water, the most important components of the environment. June 5th has been declared 'World Environment Day'. It is held annually to focus on the importance of a healthy environment and advocate for the sustainable management of the environmental resources surrounding us.

The word ‘Environment’ embodies three major components: Land (the soil), Sea (water), and the Air. To maintain and preserve the healthy ‘Environment’, ‘Soil’ and ‘Water’ are the most important parameters that we should protect from degradation, pollution, and other factors affecting their health and purity. I just returned from the centennial meeting of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in Florence, Italy.

More than 1,400 soil and environmental scientists of all nationalities and ages gathered in one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. As it was the centennial of the IUSS, I presented a paper on the value of carbon in preserving the soil health and soil quality for agricultural sustainability. I also listened to many presentations about the soil and other components of the ‘Environment’.

Among the many seminars presented during the symposium, there were also printed papers about chemicals and their components that are among the polluting elements of the environment (soil and water). Besides Nitrogen and Phosphorus, the most common pollutants are heavy metals such as Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, in which some are found in organic and ino.
