Australian swimming great Cate Campbell has shared a beautiful message after failing to qualify for a comeback Olympic Games at Paris later this year. Bidding to become the first Australian swimmer to race at five Olympics, Campbell finished seventh in the 50m freestyle at the trials in Brisbane on Saturday night. She had briefly hung the goggles up previously, missing the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but decided to give it one last crack for Paris.

Campbell made a blistering start, but faded late to touch the wall in a time of 24.76. Campbell, after missing qualifying for the 100m freestyle final by one hundredth of a second on Friday night , ends her Olympic career with four gold, one silver and three bronze medals.

In a social media post on Sunday morning, Campbell was seeing the positives. “Don’t be sad it’s over, smile because it happened,” she wrote. “I’ll find the right words later, but for now I just want to say THANK YOU.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this chapter of my life. “Last night at the pool is a moment I will never forget with people I’ll cherish forever. “To everyone who has sent messages, I’ll get back to you as soon as they stop making me cry 😭❤️.

Your kindness breaks my heart in the best way. “Congratulations to everyone .
