The Clarke County boys’ soccer team suffered heavy personnel losses from the 2023 season, but the Eagles found themselves back in familiar territory at the end of 2024. Clarke County’s Patrick Casey is The Winchester Star Boys’ Soccer Coach of the Year for the third straight season after guiding the Eagles to their fourth straight Bull Run District and Region 2B championships, and their fourth consecutive year of reaching the Class 2 state semifinals or better. After losing five All-State players and eight players who combined for 115 goals and 68 assists from last year’s state finalists, the Eagles went 19-3-1 this season.
Out of district, Clarke County went 2-1-1 in four games with Class 4 schools James Wood and Sherando (combined record: 16-14-3). Clarke County lost for the first time in Bull Run District play since 2019 on April 18 when it played Madison County (a 3-0 defeat), but the Eagles ran the table against district foes the rest of the season. Clarke County beat the Mountaineers 4-1 in the regular-season rematch and 1-0 in both the Bull Run District and Region 2B championship games.
After beating Arcadia 5-1 in the Class 2 quarterfinals, the Eagles’ season ended in the state semifinals against Radford at Salem’s Spartan Field. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie after the Highlanders scored with less than three minutes remaining. After 20 minutes of overtime, Radford won the penalty kick shootout 3-2.
