A scheme to open a new discount supermarket has taken another major step forward. Last December, Lidl was given the go-ahead to open a new store on land off Darwen Road, Bromley Cross, after a long running debate. Now plans have been approved for signage including a flagpole, two logo signs and a large, illuminated billboard at the site close to Bromley Cross train station.

A statement from planning consultants Rapley LLP said: “The proposed signage scheme has been designed to a high-quality specification in terms of materials and design. “The high-quality illumination proposed will ensure that the proposed signage scheme will not compromise public safety by causing an obstruction or distraction from the surrounding road network. “As such, the proposal is considered to respect the local environment and does not have any adverse impacts upon amenity.” The land off Darwen Road had previously been occupied by the former Hollands Nurseries site. The latest step of the proposal, including plans for the signage, had been put for the council on Wednesday, May 29 this year.
