Stonehenge has continued to attract thousands of curious visitors over the years - but it has a much older counterpart. The historical landmark, which sits in a circular formation in Wiltshire, has kept scientists baffled by its true purpose. And if things couldn't get any more confusing, a similar monument was discovered overseas in the US .
However, the American stone structure was only discovered in 2007, despite it being 5,000 years older than Stonehenge. Over in Lake Michigan lies the magnificent architecture which remained hidden until the 2000s. Before that, it was simply a hidden gem that no one knew about.
A group of archaeologists located the beauty spot whilst they were surveying the lake bed. The team , which was led by underwater archaeology professor, Mark Holley, came across the circular patterned stones by mistake. Holley, who was based at Northwestern Michigan College, admitted that his team were unsure of what the structure was at first.
They said that they found it just off the coast of Traverse City, Michigan , below 40 feet (12.1m). According to Medium, an examination appeared to reveal that the stones had purposely been arranged in the pattern by humans.
Holley said that communities were thought to be based in the exact same spot that the stones appeared. “It would've been a wonderful place for people to live – near the coastline, close to resources, transportation's easy,” he said. The stones, which weigh up to a whopping 1,360kg, are all made of .
