South Asian Heritage Month kicked off this week with a glorious feast of mouth watering flavours. Women across Birmingham brought biryani, samosas, pakoras, dhaal and seviyan to the Women's Enterprise Hub in Ladypool Road, to launch a month of honouring British Asian heritage. The special month, going on five years now, aims to deepen Britain's understanding of South Asian culture and its contribution to British society.
Monday, July 15 saw the celebration of South Asian countries including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives. The festivities will run from July 18 to August 17, this year's theme 'Free to Be Me', celebrating the beauty of simply being yourself. At the Birmingham gathering, locals spruced up the community hall with traditional fabrics, ornaments, books and decorations to remind them of home.

Kheira Mohammed, events co-ordinator for organisers Share Community Project, said: "Today we are launching and celebrating South Asian Heritage Month by highlighting the flavours of South Asia ."
