The owners of 1613 Burwood Highway, Belgrave, discovered a time capsule containing a 1945 newspaper’s front page while renovating. A heritage-listed Art Deco Belgrave house where a time capsule was discovered mid-renovation is set for a new chapter. Eleven years ago, when the family who are now selling the circa-1920s home named Hembry first moved in, the property looked rather different and even had a pink-coloured kitchen.
Bell Real Estate Belgrave and Tecoma’s Corinne Sukroo says the owners’ updated the four-bedroom residence at 1613 Burwood Highway while keeping its period charm intact, retaining original features including the living area’s fireplace, plus windows, architraves, picture rails, timber floorboards, skirting boards and the 3m-high ceiling’s ornate roses and cornices. The kitchen is no longer pink and is fitted with a 900mm Ilve cooker, dishwasher and marble-topped benches.
Glass swinging doors lead to a second living area and the owners added a media and play room at the home’s rear. The house is named Hembry, as the sign on the facade reads. The owners have painted some of the walls a lovely shade of teal.
