Australian model Shara Ray has opened up about her shock health diagnosis and recovery that left her wheelchair-bound. The 31-year-old updated her 947,000 Instagram followers that she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the nerves. Footage showed Ray smiling in a wheelchair and doing recovery exercises. In one clip, she was able to stand up and catch a ball, before passing it back to the practitioner.
“So thankful for my family and doctors for helping me get stronger everyday,” she said. “Attitude is everything.” There is no cure for the syndrome but treatment can ease symptoms, according to Mayo Clinic.
Recovery can take several years. However, most can walk again after six months of treatment. The first symptom usually experienced is weakness and tingling in the hands and feet.
