MERCER — When Mark and Linda Brown first organized the Mercer Memorial Day 500, they had two rules. One was that the occasion was not a holiday, and the second was that the military should not have to honor itself — two rules the event continues to follow, Pastor Chuck Schwartz said.

Schwartz, of Bible Baptist Church in Mercer, served as the speaker for a special service held in Mercer Citizens Cemetery, closing out Monday's Memorial Day 500 observances.
