Lucy Wolf always pitched with something to prove. The recent Haverford High graduate wasn’t the tallest, strongest, or fastest pitcher. But she was driven to succeed, no matter how often people underestimated her.

Wolf remembers feeling disappointed when she was informed there wasn’t a spot for her on the Delaware County team’s Carpenter Cup roster last year. She was told the team already had enough pitchers. Wolf was coming off a great junior season in which she helped Haverford make the District 1 Class 6A final and earn a berth in the PIAA tournament.

Being left off the Carpenter Cup team both bothered and motivated her. She was the first to show up for offseason workouts and practices, working tirelessly to improve. “Hearing that definitely frustrated me in the moment,” Wolf said.

“But at the end of the day, it only made me a better player. I’m going to work harder to prove people wrong. And that’s how my entire pitching journey has been.

People have doubted me before, but it’s only made me get better.” Entering the 2024 season, Wolf was poised to achieve great things. No longer overlooked, she went undefeated in the Central League, leading the Fords to the championship.

Now, Wolf is the Daily Times Softball Player of the Year. Joining Wolf on the All-Delco team, selected in consultation with area coaches, are her Haverford teammates Madie Culbertson and Meghan Kent; Archbishop Carroll’s Dakota Johnson; Cardinal O’Hara’s Hayden Sissons; Episcopal.
