An aggressive harasser has been banned by the courts from speaking to any women or girls after a series of incidents and and making sexual comments in a town in Cornwall. Gary McGill has also been jailed and banned from a street and two businesses in . McGill, 61, was also issued a Criminal Behaviour Order and a Sexual Harm prevention Order after police officers received multiple reports of a man being verbally aggressive and making sexual remarks at women at the end of last year.
The reports began in November 2023 and officers identified McGill with help from members of the local community. He was arrested and later released on conditional bail, but he continued repeating his behaviour. He was later arrested again for further offences and breach of bail and was remanded by the courts ahead of sentencing.
McGill was convicted and sentenced for five counts of threatening, abusive, insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress. Appearing at Magistrates Court on May 21, he was sentenced to 12-weeks in prison and a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) in addition to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) he was handed in February. Local neighbourhood beat manager PC Nina Sargent said: “McGill was unknown to local police in the early phases of this investigation and with the help of the community and their support, especially on , we were able to identify him and support the victims.
“It was with the continued support of the community providing evidence and repo.
