WEST NEBRASKA ALL-STAR GAMES It might have been an exhibition, but it didn't seem to affect the amount of pad-popping on Saturday afternoon. Both defenses dominated play as East held on for a 17-14 win to extend its streak to five games in the West Nebraska All-Star football game at Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff . Chadron's Broc Berry was the off ensive player of the game, while Sandhills/Thedford's Rhett McFadden took the defensive honor.
"It definitely was a physical game," said Mitchell's Nick Kuxhausen, who coached the West squad. "Both sides wanted to win it, you could tell it. Hopefully it's a game these kids remember and it definitely was a great game as a spectator.
" There was a different kind of hitting later in the afternoon as West had 52 kills as a team and beat East in four of the five scheduled sets in the All-Star Game matchup at the Cougar Palace on the Western Nebraska Community College campus. Scores were 25-15. 25-9, 27-29, 25-22, 15-8 as West won for the second time in the past three years.
"I think we did a great job communicating and playing with immaculate energy," said Ogallala's Marlee Ervin, who was named West's MVP and is headed to play volleyball at Southern Utah University. "We played together as a team and most importantly, we all had fun together." Sumner-Eddyville-Miller's Mikah O'Neill received the MVP honors for the East squad.
