Saturday, June 15, 2024 12 tourists lost their lives in an accident in Uttarakhand when a tempo traveller carrying tourists plunged into the swiftly flowing waters of the Alaknanda River. The accident occurred near Chamoli district, a popular destination known for its scenic beauty and religious significance. The ill-fated vehicle was reportedly carrying 26 passengers, including women and children, when it veered off the road and fell into the river from a considerable height.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as emergency services rushed to the spot to rescue survivors and retrieve bodies from the water. According to local authorities, 14 others sustained injuries of varying degrees. Rescue operations were immediately launched by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police, with support from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel who are well-versed in high-altitude rescue operations.

“The tempo traveller was traveling from Joshimath towards Haridwar when the driver lost control near Srinagar. It fell into the river with great force,” reported an official from the scene. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, tweeting, “Saddened by the tragic accident in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.

My thoughts are with the bereaved families and prayers with the injured. Authorities are working on the ground to provide all possible assistance.” Local hospitals in Chamoli have been put on high alert to provide medical care to the injur.
