The UK experienced the world's "worst" ever outbreak of E.coli nearly 30 years ago - as a new wave of cases of the stomach bug rises across the country. Britain is experiencing a new outbreak of E.

coli, with at least 67 cases reported in the last month. Brits have been warned to throw away their sandwiches, salads and wraps after several shops were forced to recall the food staples - and our map shows the most recent cases. Stores involved in the latest recall alert include most major supermarket chains such as Asda , Aldi , Sainsbury's and Tesco .

Other places include Boots and WH Smith . And it has been nearly three decades since the UK saw a devastating outbreak in November 1996, where meat poisoned with E. coli claimed 21 lives in Lanarkshire, Scotland .

Scores of people, young and old, fell ill after eating products from John Barr butchers in Wishaw - with the butcher confessing he had barely even heard of the bug before the tragedy. A report at the time of the tragedy highlighted inadequate training of staff at Barr's shop on Caledonian Road, implicated in the outbreak. It identified five key errors including: failure to use temperature probes for cooking raw meat; failure to draw up cleaning schedules to reduce the risk of contamination at the premises; failure to separate completely within the premises processes relating to raw meat and cooked meat; failure to provide separate knives and equipment for each of the separate processes; failure to provide clear management.
