What causes hearing loss? There are different types of hearing loss and there are many causes of hearing loss. If you suspect a problem, see a doctor of audiology to determine if you have hearing loss and where the hearing loss is coming from. There are three types of hearing loss , sensorineural, conductive, and mixed, which is a combination of sensorineural and conductive.

Sensorineural is the most common hearing loss and it is often referred to as “nerve hearing loss” or “nerve deafness.” This hearing loss comes from the organ of hearing, also known as the cochlea, located in the inner ear. The cochlea is a small snail-shaped organ filled with hair cells that transmit the sound to the nerve that then carries it to the brain.

Sometimes some of the hair cells die. Exposure to loud noise, medications, trauma to the head, certain illnesses, and even normal aging can cause sensorineural hearing loss. Javascript is required for you to be able to read premium content.
