Health officials have issued an urgent warning as the deadly West Nile Virus has been detected in multiple US states, including Tennessee, Texas, Pennsylvania, and California . The Metro Public Health Department (MPHD) in Nashville said on Wednesday that a mosquito pool in Davidson County has tested positive for the virus, marking the first detection in 2024. Residents in impacted areas have been advised to follow steps to protect themselves from biting mosquitoes and reduce standing water where mosquitoes can lay eggs.

Urgent health warning issued as new bird flu symptom a 'dangerous' sign Third person tests positive for bird flu as outbreak spreads across US farms This comes after a high level of West Nile Virus was detected in mosquito pools last year. In 2023, the MPHD said nearly 23 percent of traps collected throughout the year tested positive for the virus, compared to roughly two percent in 2021 and 2022. The first human case of West Nile Virus in over five years was detected in Nashville in the summer of 2023, investigators said.

In addition to taking steps to reduce the mosquito population, officials also recommend taking personal protective measures to prevent bites. This includes limiting time outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, wearing mosquito repellent approved for use by the CDC, wearing shoes, socks, long sleeve shirts, and pants outdoors, and making sure windows and doors have screens in good repair.
