In diverse and multi-lingual Ticino, Swiss elegance and Italian flair dance side by side Ticino's lakes. Picture: Silvano Zeiter A horn sounds, prompting our battello to glide across the onyx waters of Lake Lugano, named after the Swiss city we’re departing. I wave at the locals pounding the promenade; the trees act as a canopy, sheltering them from the morning drizzle.

Some return the gesture, bemused by my enthusiasm, especially given the damp conditions. But no matter the weather, Switzerland and her glorious landscape invigorate. Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè, shrouded in mist and mystery today, frame our route.



Occasional spears of sunshine illuminate the buildings etched into these Alpine mountains — villas, watchtowers, modern apartment blocks, and churches with their sonorous bells..
