Island Oasis Water Park in Grand Island will offer a fitness component to its lazy river. Walking and lap swimming will be allowed on Friday mornings, the city said in a release. Starting Friday, June 28, the facility will offer visitors the chance to swim or walk the river from 9-11 a.

m. for $5 per visit. Island Oasis will accept season passes as well.

Paid admission will be good only for that timeframe. Walking and lap swimming will now be allowed on Friday mornings at Island Oasis Water Park. "There's always been demand," City Recreation Superintendent Jeremy Bachmann said, noting other municipalities with water parks offer similar options.

"It's (about) offering it to the community, having another way to reach out to the older population, have the waterpark serve them." Bachmann said the city reworked its swim lesson schedule to Monday through Thursday, freeing up Friday mornings, which had been a "fun" day for lessons. He said if a day of swim lessons is canceled, Friday lap/walk swimming will be canceled.

Island Oasis Water Park is located at 321 E. Fonner Park Road in Grand Island. "We'd love to have more times to offer it," he said of the laps and walking option, while noting swim lessons are a higher priority.

But, "if we can find more time, we'll add that." Patrons must be 16 years of age or older and no children will be admitted, the city said. For more information call the Island Oasis Water Park at 308-385-5381.
