Cases of whooping cough, the flu and gastro have surged this year, with the spike in illness hitting children hard and adding 'unprecedented' pressure on some hospitals. Influenza infections in 2024 are already 27 per cent higher than the first six months of last year, with more than 170,000 cases and 29 per cent of those in children under nine years old.
A leading GP has said vaccine fatigue leftover from the Covid pandemic was contributing to the spike and urged Aussies to roll up their sleeve, with some strains of viruses going around this year appearing to be particularly strong.
