Sodiq Ojuroungbe Stakeholders have underscored the important role vaccination plays in averting diseases caused by the Human Papillomavirus and called for even vaccination of girls aged nine to 14 years against the virus. They made the call on Saturday at an event organised by Global Health Advocacy Incubator, the Vaccine Network for Disease Control, and the Nigerian Psychological Association, FCT Chapter, at the Anguwan Hausawa Community in Apo, Abuja. In addition to advocating for vaccination, the event addressed the issue of mental health in the community.
The Founder of VNDC, Mrs Chika Offor, highlighted the critical role of vaccination in averting HPV-related diseases, notably cervical cancer and why early immunisation serves as a proactive measure against other HPV-related cancers. She acknowledged obstacles hindering the high vaccination coverage rate in the country, citing cultural beliefs, lack of awareness and logistic challenges. Offor stated, “We are steadfast in our commitment to educate communities about the benefits of HPV vaccination and dispelling misconceptions.
“By targeting girls between the ages of nine and 14, Nigeria can optimise vaccine efficacy and substantially diminish susceptibility to HPV-related ailments.” The Assistant General-Secretary of the Nigerian Psychological Association, Dr Jurbe Bisji, highlighted the role of community support in nurturing mental well-being. He advocated for open dialogue, a supportive environment and resource exc.
