A long-awaited road widening scheme got underway in August 1939 between the Squirrel Hotel at Anderton and Crown Square in Horwich . This photo shows the scene at Anderton Ford Bridge where the foundations were being laid for a larger bridge. In the background you can see the Squirrel Hotel which was demolished in the 1960s.
