ROCHESTER — A Red Wing nursing home will close this summer due to financial and physical issues that prompted the Minnesota Department of Health to take over management of the facility last year. The news was delivered to Bay View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center's 117 staff members, 50 residents and their families on Tuesday, May 22, according to press release from MDH. Residents will be relocated as soon as possible, and the target date for closing the facility is July 22.

"Despite our best efforts, ongoing audits of Bay View’s financial circumstances have revealed a systemic lack of stability that cannot be overcome in order for operations to continue,” Maria King, director of MDH's Health Regulation Division, said in a statement. “Our primary goal is to ensure residents have access to safe and competent care. Unfortunately, the financial condition of Bay View combined with substantial physical plant repair needs have left us with no viable options.

” MDH has managed the facility under an emergency temporary receivership court order since December 2023, when MDH investigators found "a pattern of failing to meet ongoing financial obligations" at the facility, including not paying employees and vendors in a timely manner.
