A father-of-five was fatally stabbed in the head with a knife as violence flared in Cleethorpes town centre last summer, a murder trial has heard. Tom Gaughan, 33, died in hospital last August after succumbing to the injury which was inflicted on the corner of High Street and Grant Street almost a month earlier. Connor Hulse, 22, of High Street, Cleethorpes, denies the charge of murder with the trial, presided over by Judge John Thackray KC, due to last two weeks.

The trial was told Mr Gaughan was stabbed with sufficient force for the knife to penetrate his skull and enter his brain shortly after 7pm on July 21, 2023. Mr Gaughan died on August 15 from a brain injury, a post mortem examination revealed.
Prosecuting, Sam Green KC told the jury the stabbing caused Mr Gaughan's brain to bleed and swell up, saying: "The injury to his brain culminated in his death a few weeks later. The prosecution case is that Connor Hulse was the person who stabbed him and that Connor Hulse is, therefore, guilty of murder." The trial was told Connor Hulse passed the knife to girlfriend, Gabrielle Hough, of Louth, some time after the stabbing.
She put it in the right hand back pocket of her jeans. It was found by police when they arrested Mr Hulse. A.
