Sodiq Ojuroungbe Amid the recurring cholera outbreaks plaguing Nigeria, the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria has stressed the critical importance of swift and comprehensive intervention. It called for swift and decisive action to contain the ongoing outbreak through an effective and sustainable response. The President of the Academy, Prof Oladapo Ashiru in a statement, said there is a need to take urgent measures that focus on heightened public awareness and community engagement.

Emphasising the necessity of social mobilisation, Ashiru said the government need to educate the populace on cholera’s transmission routes and effective preventive strategies. The don, who is President of the African Reproductive Care Society, highlighted access to clean water, improved hygiene practices, and sanitation as integral to long-term disease prevention efforts aligned with Nigeria’s Sustainable Development Goals. Ashiru, who is also serving as Secretary-General of the International Federation of Fertility Societies, acknowledged the recurrent nature of cholera in Nigeria and emphasised the need to nip it in the bud using proven prevention strategies.
