Welcome to this week’s issue of The Week in Medicine – a round-up of all the happenings in the world of Irish medicine Gardens can be peaceful or a lot of hard work – depending on your garden and your attitude, but a garden at the Bloom show in Dublin this weekend has the ambition to take you on a journey – a cancer journey. Designed by award-winning landscape architect David Gallagher, the garden is a collaboration between the Marie Keating Foundation and AstraZeneca with the purpose of combatting cancer through awareness. The garden contains educational resources focusing on the five most common cancers in Ireland – breast, skin, lung, bowel and prostate – and is an interactive space created to promote proactive health management across diverse populations.
The garden features a meandering path which represents the cancer journey. Along the path is a sculpture, representing hope and resilience, which then leads to a circular reflection area with a fire pit. A space to sit and talk, it symbolises the importance of conversations and community which the Marie Keating Foundation provides to people on a cancer journey.
This is Gallagher’s third show garden at Bord Bia Bloom. His first, An Gairdín Cuil, won a silver in 2012 and his second, Urban Roots Balcony, won a silver in 2023. As part of Bloom this year, the Marie Keating Foundation are holding a competition giving people the chance to win an exclusive garden consultation with Mr Gallagher.
