The King’s Speech was the longest monarch’s speech at a State Opening of Parliament in more than two decades. It was also the most legislation-heavy speech since 2005, with its 40 bills being the highest number to be announced at a State Opening since that year. Despite the high number of bills, Labour have been criticised for what was left off their legislative agenda. There was no mention of removing the two-child cap on benefits despite the severe impact the policy has on child poverty, and pledged reforms to the House of Lords were also watered down.
