The 33-year-old had previously been handed the award as part of the 2020 New Year's Honours list. It came after the Yorkshire batter had helped England win the 2019 ODI World Cup, with Eoin Morgan ' side sealing a dramatic victory over New Zealand in the final at Lord's, after the match went to a Super Over.

Root had also been the leading run scorer for England during the tournament, finishing fifth in the rankings of the top run-scorers, scoring a total of 556.
