Justin Sullivan Johnson & Johnson has reached a $700M settlement with 43 state attorneys general over the company's marketing of baby powder products containing talc. The proposed consent judgment concerns allegations that the company "deceptively promoted and misled consumers in advertisements related to the safety and purity of some of its talc powder products," according to a news release from the Massachusetts Attorney General office. Although Johnson & Johnson has previously stopped selling talc-based products in the U.
S. and the rest of the world, the judgment means that the healthcare giant cannot resume making such products. The agreement comes as J&J ( NYSE: JNJ ) is facing tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging use of its talc-based powders led to individuals developing cancer.
