THOUSANDS of homeowners have been left disgusted over water "as dark as coffee" coming from their taps - with one woman telling how she doesn't "trust" the supply. Dundalk, Co Louth's residents noticed the "water running brown" from their piper on Wednesday evening. A burst of water has caused supply disruptions to Newry Road, Armagh Road, Racecourse Road, Ballymascanlan, Dundalk and surrounding areas in Co.

Louth. Mariane McCarthy said the issue has happened "many times," but yesterday's event was the "worst" she has seen so far. She told the Irish Sun: "This happens very often here in Dundalk.

Yesterday was the worst I've seen so far. It was as dark as coffee. "This year, I even started buying gallons of water to drink because I no longer trust tap water.

"I can't even tell you how many times this has happened this year. "The water in my bathroom for flushing is still dark. It must be because it came from the street, and my tank must be full of this water.

"So I'm leaving the tap open to ';renew' the water. The one in the kitchen is already clear today." Irish Water has said the water supply has returned to normal for most customers in Dundalk following the repair of a 450mm dia trunk main located at Mount Avenue, Co Louth.

They added: "Following the repair work, it can take some time for normal supply to fully restore to all areas, especially for those on higher ground or at the end of the network. "Anyone who experiences issues with discolouration is asked to run the cold.
