A WOMAN claims her friend's barbecue nearly killed her when she swallowed a wire bristle hidden in her kebab — skewering her own throat. Jessica Doster immediately knew there was an issue moments after eating the chicken shish kebab made by a friend in Indianapolis, Indiana . She first thought it was a piece of food that had gotten stuck in her throat, leaving her gasping for air.
"I took a couple of bites [of my shish kebab] and immediately knew something was wrong. I thought I had something caught in my throat. There was a lot of pressure at the bottom of my neck," she told The U.
S. Sun. But when the pain got worse that evening, the 35-year-old healthcare administrator headed to the emergency room.
"I immediately had to stop eating. I couldn't swallow. I could take sips of water and whisper words out.
I knew something was very wrong," Doster said. The doctors initially told her that she most likely "scratched her throat." However, days went by and Jessica was barely able to breathe or swallow whole foods.
"Now we know that a nerve was puncturing my esophagus. I couldn't eat solid foods. I was getting excruciating back pain radiating down my back.
I was now gasping for air as I was breathing," Doster said. "I was scared I was going to die in my sleep. I went home from the hospital and the pain was unbearable.
" She shed six pounds in less than a week due to the foreign object that was secretly lurking in her throat. "I had lost a significant amount of weight at this point. .
