By contrast, just one in 80 were thought to have taken up the habit in 2013. Concerningly, around one in six 18-year-olds who have never smoked before were also found to be long-term users of the devices.

In a nod to the Government's plan to ban disposable vapes, researchers said this was particularly a concern and 'harmful to public health'. Campaigners have long called for much tougher regulations — including an immediate ban on marketing to children and a tax on disposable vapes, which are most popular among teens. Admission rates for 'vaping-related disorders' in under-20s generally have also risen six-fold over the same period.
