As Australia’s east coast shivers through freezing weather , many are struggling with a cold or flu . If a nasty cough is disrupting your sleep, or that of a little one, a former paramedic has revealed a simple remedy. Nikki Jurcutz, who worked as a paramedic for eight years with Ambulance Victoria , said a spoonful of honey worked wonders for relieving a niggling cough at bedtime.

Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today “Hearing their little coughs at night, knowing that they aren’t getting a good night’s sleep because of it, can be heartbreaking,” the founder of children’s safety organisation Tiny Hearts Education said in an Instagram post. “I’ve been there too.” When her kids are struggling with a cough at night, she feeds them honey before bed.



“A spoonful of honey has been a game changer in my home,” Jurcutz said. “This tip has saved me so many times, and I’m hoping it helps another parent, too. “Just remember, keep your little one’s teeth clean — make sure to brush their teeth before going to bed too.

” Jurcutz suggested mixing honey with a small amount of warm liquid if it’s something your little one prefers. However, she warned honey should never be given to children under 12 months. “There is a risk of infant botulism,” she said.

According to NSW Health, raw honey has been shown to cause infant botulism as it contains a type of bacteria called Clostridium. When infants ingest the spores of the bacteria, they can experie.
