Some claimed a 'Glastonbury-esque scramble' for GP appointments left them unable to access contraception as a reason they had to seek a termination. Others resorted to trendy fertility tracker apps touted as 'natural contraceptives' and ended up with an unplanned pregnancy.

It comes as official data show a record 252,122 abortions were carried out in England and Wales in 2022, a 17 per cent rise on the previous year. This is equivalent to one in every 50 women in England and Wales between the age of 15 to 44 having a termination. A closer look at the figures reveals that women in their early 20s — among those dubbed Generation Rent, as so few can afford a mortgage — were the most likely age group to opt for an abortion in 2022, with 36.
