Amid the worsening weather conditions hospitals in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and other places have been noticing a surge in patients getting admitted due to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke and diarrhoea cases. Dr Anantha Padmanabha , Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru told News9 , “Heatstroke’s rise in causing diarrhoea is likely due to a combined effect of high external temperatures. When the body overheats, dehydration disrupts the digestive system’s delicate balance of fluids and electrolytes.

This imbalance irritates the gut lining, leading to diarrhoea. Additionally, heatstroke creates a stressful response, potentially affecting gut motility and promoting loose stools.” According to recent studies, there has been a notable rise in gastrointestinal issues, including diarrhoea, during periods of extreme heat.

Causes for this include water contamination, dehydration, and bacterial growths called scherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmon.
