Ireland is among the major healthcare emitters per capita internationally Dr Philip Crowley presented the HSE Climate Strategy during the session, one of the first national health service climate strategies globally, and discussed the progress on implementation and exploring relevant actions for ophthalmology practice. Healthcare is a notable contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for an estimated five per cent of total emissions globally, and is also responsible for responding to people’s changing health needs affected by climate change. Ireland is among the major healthcare emitters per capita internationally and the HSE Climate Strategy is one of the first national health service climate strategies globally.
Dr Crowley told delegates that the health service-wide strategy aims to reduce the negative climate impacts of our health service, achieve net-zero emissions for the HSE by 2050, and deliver healthcare that is environmentally and socially sustainable to protect and promote population health in Ireland. Delegates at the ICO ‘Sustainability in Ophthalmology’ symposium also heard presentations from Dr Emilie Mahon , Ophthalmology Clinical Tutor, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin, Mr Arthur Cummings , Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Wellington Eye Clinic, Dublin and Miss Radhika Rampat (virtual presentation) Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Royal Free London NHS Trust, London and co-chair of the American European Congress Of Ophthalmic Surgery �.
