Mumbai: Buddha Purnima is a revered festival observed by Buddhists worldwide to commemorate the birth of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. Although the precise date of his birth remains uncertain, it is traditionally celebrated on the full moon day of the Vaisakha month in the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, Buddha Purnima falls on Thursday, May 23rd.

Gautama Buddha originally named Prince Siddhartha Gautama, was born in 623 BC in the tranquil surroundings of Lumbini, Nepal. His subsequent spiritual quest had a profound and enduring impact on the world. Lumbini, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, continues to draw pilgrims from around the world.

Buddha Purnima provides an opportunity for contemplation on the fundamental tenets of Buddhism: peace, compassion, and enlightenment. In certain regions of South and Southeast Asia, this festival coincides with Vesak, which commemorates not only the day of Buddha’s enlightenment but also his transition into Nirvana. This auspicious occasion presents a chance to promote the ideals of peace and harmony.
