The Global Arts in Medicine Fellowship, Arts in Medicine Ghana, the Global South Arts and Health Envoy, and Te-Apo Foundation hosted the Global South Arts and Health Week (GSAHW) Ghana Pavilion 2024 to promote holistic health through art, education, and community engagement. Themed “Health Beyond Medicine,” the festival took place from May 20-26, 2024, in Accra, with over 500 participants throughout the week. It addressed key areas such as Mental Health, Neuroscience, Brain and Geriatric Health, Public Health, Child Health, Inclusive and Safe Society, Good Health and Well-being, Health Promotion and Education, Climate Change and Environmental Health, Disability, Maternal Health, and Maternal Mental Health.
Christopher Bailey, the Arts and Health Lead of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Co-founder of Jameel Arts and Health Lab, emphasized the comprehensive approach to health in his keynote address, stating, “Health is not merely the absence of disease but the attainment of the highest level of physical, mental, and emotional well-being.” Doris Komla, Country Festival Director of GSAHW, highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting the high incidence of stroke in Ghana and the need for better access to CT scans for early diagnosis and treatment. She praised the collaborative efforts that made the festival a success.
