We are all looking for ways to slow down the ageing process, from exercise and diet, to over-the-counter products. But Dr Michael Mosley believes he may have found a vital tool in the fight to stay healthy as we age - and it has been around for thousands of years. The health guru has looked into research suggesting that yoga boosts strength and flexibility, enhances your mood, and reduces stress and anxiety -and it might be able to 'delay or slow down the rate of cellular ageing'.

As part of his Just One Thing podcast on the BBC , Dr Mosley looked into its history and health benefits. Yoga has been around for at least 5000 years, but it only became popular worldwide in the 19th century, when photos allowed the various movements and poses to be easily shared around the globe. Although there are many different types of yoga, there are five well-known variants - Vinyasa, Astanga, Hatha, Iyengar, and Hot Yoga.



Dr Mosley looked at Hatha yoga, and found some startling results. "Yoga is an ancient practice for the body and mind that can boost strength and flexibility," he said. "There are many different types of yoga practices, but generally it involves physical poses, breath control and meditation.
