Recent research indicates that distinct subtypes of PCOS exist, each with unique underlying mechanisms, necessitating specific treatment leading to more personalized and successful management strategies New Delhi: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is rapidly rising in India with an incidence rate of 3.7 to 22.5 per cent.

It is a multifactorial endocrine disorder mostly characterised by irregular periods, weight gain and hirsutism. It is one of the pre-eminent causes of infertility among women. However, recognising the different subtypes of PCOS is essential for effective management.



Dr Kinjal Kothari, Associate Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynecology, Manipal Hospital Goa shared with News9 , “Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder affecting women during their reproductive years. It is characterised by irregular menstrual cycles, elevated androgen levels, and polycystic ovaries. Recent research indicates that distinct subtypes exist, each with unique underlying mechanisms, necessitating specific treatment leading to more personalized and successful management strategies.

” Subtypes of PCOS: • Insulin-Resistant PCOS: The most prevalent form, dominated by insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. Women with this subtype often experience significant weight gain, particularly around the midsection, and face an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. • Inflammatory PCOS: Chronic inflammation is the hallmark of this subtype.
