Wilkie, who was born in Sri Lanka in 1954 to Scottish parents, won 200m breastroke gold for Great Britain in Montreal in 1976, while he was similarly a double gold medalist at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand. However, on Wednesday morning, his family tragically announced that he had passed away following a battle with cancer .

In a statement released to the PA news agency, they said: 'It is with great sadness that the family of David Wilkie MBE announce that he died peacefully surrounded by his family this morning, following his brave battle with cancer.' Across his career, the legendary Wilkie also won two Olympic silver medals, three world titles and two European Championship golds.
