Cones have been put in place after a closed town centre road sign caused confusion this morning. Bank Street going towards the town centre was shut this morning, to the surprise of motorists. But several drivers coming from Folds Road area travelled up the street, while others carried on past Bow Street following diversion signs.
Traffic can turn onto Bank Street, with cones separating lanes - however, 'road closed' signs can be seen at the junction - adding further confusion. One road user said: “I saw the roadworks this morning and it was quite confusing. “It said road closed, but traffic was still turning onto Bank Street.
“Now, however, they have put cones in between the lines so that traffic going in opposite directions won't crash into each other. “It makes more sense this way.” Another motorist said: "The cones have not made it any clearer.
There are signs saying 'road ahead closed' but the cones clearly allow traffic to turn into Bank Street. "It is a really odd setup." Another driver noticed the chaos and said the council should be warned of what was happening.
They said: “The road at Bank Street been closed with a diversion in place meaning no vehicles upwards towards Preston’s of Bolton from Folds Road. “But multiple cars are ignoring the signs and turning into oncoming traffic. “ It is not clear what work is being done and how long the road will be closed for.
Roadworks are also causing delays in the Astley Bridge area. Thornham Drive is shut due.
