Connecticut resident John Kellogg Northrop, Jr. was an older brother of siblings and acted as their protector, he loved motorcycles, carpentry and a good cookout, according to his family. But Northrop, 52, also struggled with mental health issues.

Northrop took his own life on June 15, 2022, according to a new lawsuit and the law firm representing his family. The lawsuit, recently filed in Connecticut Superior Court , is against Danbury Hospital , Nuvance Health Inc., Western Connecticut Health Network Inc.

and Nuvance Medical Health Practice CT, Inc., records show. A spokesperson for Nuvance Health CT said they do not comment on pending litigation.

The complaint alleges Northrop’s death “was caused by the negligence and carelessness of Danbury Hospital’s behavioral and mental healthcare staff. Repeated behavioral assessments failed to recognize critical warning signs or adequately address Mr. Northrop’s mental health crisis,” according to attorney Paul Edwards of Trantolo & Trantolo, LLC, the firm representing Northrop’s family.

Northrop was taken to the emergency room at Danbury Hospital for evaluation and treatment following a suicide attempt on June 7, 2022, the suit says. Northrop was assessed the next day by hospital behavioral and mental healthcare staff who found him as having “capacity” and concluded “there was no need for inpatient level of psychiatric care,” the lawsuit alleges. Northrop was discharged from the hospital the next day, it says.
