The woman in her 80s was walking with her partner along the South West Coast Path in Dorset when she lost her balance and slipped over a sheer drop at Winspit Quarry near the Purbeck village of Worth Matravers. Police, ambulance service, three fire crews, three coastguard teams and the coastguard helicopter descended on the coastal scene after the alarm was raised at at around 2pm last Saturday.
But there was nothing they could to save the woman, who was from Poole, and she was pronounced dead at the scene at about 2.30pm. Emergency services said the coastal path run just several metres from the edge.
